Turning Point responds to Time for Change: The Challenge Ahead for Learning Disability Services

News item posted: 19 June 2017

In response to today's 'Time for Change: The Challenge Ahead' report, Fiona Ritchie OBE, Managing Director for Learning Disability services at Turning Point and member of the Winterbourne View Provider Delivery Taskforce said:

'I welcome this report and its recommendations but we need more than words now. The fact that the government has missed their own timetable for closure of institutional services is unacceptable. People deserve better.

'Everyone is in agreement that the future of learning disability support is community-based; co-produced with individuals and their carers; staffed by a trained and competent workforce and funded sufficiently. The challenge ahead, therefore, sits with the government and local commissioners to take forward the recommendations in this report and invest in community services that are fit for the future. To maintain the status quo on this agenda would be a societal failure and one people with learning disabilities should not have to face.’
