Turning Point responds to drug misuse statistics from HSCIC

In response to the statistics on drug misuse in England by the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC), Selina Douglas, Turning Point's Managing Director for Substance Misuse services said;

"These statistics show that the government and local authorities cannot afford to be complacent about drug misuse and its cost to the public. The report highlights the increasing number of people being admitted to hospital with poisoning directly related to illicit drug use. It is therefore important that local authorities maintain their investment in drug treatment services within community and hospital settings.

Our experience through staff based in A & E in Sunderland shows us that having drug and alcohol workers who are able to provide advice and link to substance misuse services locally helps reduce the likelihood that people will return. Services like this, supported by continued investment in community provision, should be replicated across the country if we are to avoid seeing this statistical increase year on year."
