Turning Point responds to annual alcohol treatment statistics from PHE

News item posted: 19 June 2017

In response to the annual alcohol treatment statistics published today by Public Health England (PHE), Selina Douglas, Managing Director for Substance Misuse and Offending at Turning Point, said;

"It is to be welcomed that more people are accessing and successfully completing treatment, as well as waiting less time for their treatment to start. We need to continue to build on this success.

We know that early intervention is vital to addressing alcohol misuse. For example Turning Point works within a multi-disciplinary team in Sunderland Royal Hospital providing a range of interventions for people with alcohol related conditions and linking them to local community based services. In 2012 a six month evaluation showed that 57% of people who engaged in a one-off brief intervention did not return to A&E within 6 months with an alcohol related issue. Developments like this ensure that we continue to reach individuals who need our support at the right time and are essential to addressing the impact of alcohol misuse."
