Turning Point launches Smoking Cessation Pilots

News item posted: 19 June 2017

Today, health and social care organisation, Turning Point, is launching smoking cessation pilots in six of their substance misuse services with the support of Public Health England (PHE).

Today also marks the beginning of Stoptober, the national 'stop smoking month' led by Public Health England, to encourage people to stop smoking throughout the month of October.

The smoking cessation pilots are built on research, previously undertaken by the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust (SLAM) which shows that there is a strong relationship between smoking and the use of other substances.

Within Turning Point's services, substance misuse staff will be supported to address tobacco smoking with service users. This will include testing staff knowledge and perceptions of tobacco smoking and training staff to deliver Very Brief Advice (VBA) with service users on smoking cessation.

Selina Douglas, Turning Point's Managing Director for Substance Misuse Services and Offending said;

"Tackling some of the long term health issues of our service users and promoting better wellbeing is one of our key aims and I am delighted that we are able to run these smoking cessation pilot schemes supported by PHE."

"We know that Drug and Alcohol services have a central role to play in assisting Public Health England in reducing the big killers, including COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and smoking cessation is an integral part of this."

Rosanna O'Connor, Director of Alcohol, Drugs and Tobacco at Public Health England said:

"With PHE support, Turning Point's pilots are leading the way for all substance misuse treatment providers to support stopping smoking. If someone has sought help for alcohol and drug problems, it makes sense that they are given the opportunity to stop smoking at the same time and further improve their chances of a healthy life."

"PHE has encouraged treatment professionals to capitalise on the national attention and resources for Stoptober, and to tackle smoking in their services."
