Turning Point launches new substance misuse service in Leicester & Leicestershire

News item posted: 19 June 2017

On Monday 5th December 2016, Turning Point held an open day to launch its new substance misuse service in Leicester City and Leicestershire.

The open day was held at Turning Point’s Eldon Street hub, where members of staff showcased information about services provided at its hubs in Leicester City, Coalville and Loughborough. Interactive sessions were held to demonstrate what is offered at each location.

The service also includes a young people/young adult team, support in hospital, community criminal justice and prison services.

Sessions and stalls were held on topics such as friends and family support, the needle exchange, health and wellbeing clinics, peer mentoring, and group work provision – all available at the service. The event offered a unique opportunity for people to look around the building and meet peer mentors as well as staff.

Councillor Ernie White, Leicestershire County Council’s cabinet member for health, said: ‘This is a superb example of partnership working involving councils, health, police and the probation service which aims to be as accessible as possible to people, including hubs at Loughborough and Coalville. We want to ensure that people are supported in their progress towards recovery and that includes their families.’

Police and Crime Commissioner Lord Willy Bach said: ‘Drug and substance misuse causes untold misery for people affected by addiction, their families and those who become victims of crime in order to feed a habit. I’m pleased to see a consistent approach to tackling these issues and supporting people out of the revolving door of addiction and crime across Leicester & Leicestershire.’

Sarah Hancock-Smith, Operations Manager at Turning Point said: ‘At the heart of our service is the belief that everyone has the power to change and make different, healthier choices. Our members of staff have a lot of experience supporting people to decide what changes they want to make in their lives, whether that is for a long period time for some or brief support for others. This is your recovery, and we will support you.’
