Statement on Panorama's Locked Up For Being Unwell? programme

Lord Victor Adebowale, chair of the commission on mental health and police said of Panorama's 'Locked up for being unwell?' last night;
'Panorama highlighted the urgent need for the health and police services to work together to support people with mental health needs.

As the Commission on Mental Health and Police reported, mental health is core business for the police. The Commission's recommendations urge all forces to look at the mental health training of officers and how services, particularly the ambulance service, work with police to respond to an emergency.
It is usually the case that if you experience a health crisis an ambulance comes and you are treated by health professionals. If you are experiencing a mental health crisis too often the police are called and you're held in a cell. This disparity is unacceptable and must urgently be addressed if people in distress are to get the support they need and deserve.'
