In response to the Prime Minister’s announcement on mental health (9th January), Lord Victor Adebowale, Chief Executive of Turning Point said:

‘We welcome Theresa May’s commitment to reducing the gap between physical and mental health. What we now need to see is these promises put into action. For too long mental health has been seen as secondary to physical health, but through increased funding and a step change in the way we think about mental health, we may soon see better treatment for people with mental health issues.

‘The question now, however, is whether an increase in funding will go far enough.

‘Theresa May must also recognise the ways in which mental health and substance misuse are strongly interlinked. Many people experience mental health issues and feel they have nowhere else to turn, using drugs and alcohol as a way to cope.

‘By integrating mental health and substance misuse services, people could have access to a more holistic form of support which would be another step towards improving mental health services in this country.’
