Responding to new guidelines drawn up for police and healthcare professionals which state that people restrained in mental health settings will get the care they need, Lord Victor Adebowale, Chief Executive of health and social care organisation Turning Point, said:

‘This new guidance issued by the College of Policing is welcome, particularly as I called for this very policy to be introduced when I chaired the Independent Commission on Mental Health and Policing.

‘Key findings from the Independent Commission on Mental Health and Policing Report showed that people with mental health issues often complained of being treated like criminals, whilst family members could not understand why there was not better communications between agencies, meaning police officers were often unaware of people’s mental health when interacting with them.

‘This new guidance will hopefully mean that people with mental health issues are treated with the care and respect they deserve.’
